Missed another fashion update ...
I went shoe shopping Saturday, hoping to find a pair of shoes that would be sturdy enough for walking lots in Glasgow and environs but be less bulky to pack and drag around than my (incredibly filthy at the moment) sneakers.

What did I find instead?

Pink. Lots of pink.

But pink, it turned out, was just the tip of the shoe-fashion iceberg. There were shoes made of rosy-pink brocade, shoes with many sequins and lots of shoes that looked as if they'd desired to be ballet slippers (and toe shoes, at that!) in a former life, complete with ties to be wrapped around your legs and turned into bows before you could go anywere. Given some of my inclinations toward entropy, I shuddered at the thought of how many times a day I'd have to re-tie/re-adjust/ those ribbons and ties. We're not even going to consider what would happen to them in mud and rain.

I had to avert my eyes from all the huge cork platform shoes that are still out there in the universe and from lots of other pairs of shoes/boots that would both out-weigh the sneakers I don't want to pack and be more awkward as well.

Walking shoes? they were in short supply ... but there was a nice little pair of flats that came home, designed for dancing, the manufacturer claimed, but clearly able to stand up to a fair amount of walking -- and heavily discounted as well. And they're not really pink, either ... just sort of muted pale purple. The manufacturer calls it "grape".

Pink! It's the new black! Although don't let a goth hear you say that.

Should I think of something that'd be more annoying? Maybe I'll just ask Eli to turn my hair pink when I see him tomorrow ... but probably not!

I don't think Pink hair is You. I just got Eli'ed about two weeks ago.

Try Easy Spirit. It's the only place I've found decent walking/working shoes that weren't sneakers.

I second that recommendation, and it's not just because they're one of the only shoe brands which make narrow widths, either.

Brooks makes really good walking shoes that don't give podiatrists conniption fits. I told mine I wore Easy Spirits and he all but shuddered.

Rockport
They have a 2" heeled "Oxford" that I'm able to wear 5 days in a row for work and housecleaning. They also had really nice open-toed sandles (if that's your thing). Don't recommend breaking a "thong-styled" toe in at Glasgow, though.

Re: Rockport
Yes, Rockports rock... Almost all my shoes are Rockports.

Pink?
Well, that would have fit in really well at Baggiecon...

Makes me thank ghu
for my black walking shoes.

After a 'slightly' fractured ankle in 1982 (chip taken off, did not realize it at the time), I can't stand to wear anything with any lift (more than 1/2 inch difference between heel and toe).

So I usually have only two to three pairs of shoes, mostly $10 Walmart Faux-kin-stocks and a good good pair of walking shoes (~$60-70), and MAYBE (not right now) a pair of dressy black flats.

But I feel your pain. Mom took me clothes shopping weekend before this one and there were a lot of things that looked really good on the hanger but was WAY too clingy (fabric too thin-others do NOT need to see every line of my underthings). Plus mom held up a bunch of 'lookit this' things and I looked at the color/style and said 'not in our lifetimes....'. We did find some nice things though, many of which will accompany me to Scotland.

See you there, dear! (hug across the e-ways)

Doesn't surprise me... color trends tend to spread, and the Bat Mitzvah girls are liking pink invitations this year. (It's amazing how they go in cycles.)

I hate shoe-shopping, I usually stay with Naturalizer. They're actually more comfortable than my sneakers.

BTW, why the new username? Just wondering...
Elaine Brennan[info]elaine_brennan on July 19th, 2005 01:59 pm (UTC)
In large part because I got tired of people saying "what's your user name again???"; that, plus the fact that the more I wrote private entries there, the less and less inclined I've been to write anything public.

so ... new journal.

Makes sense. And I like your icon. :-)

Thanks to all for the various suggestions -- the problem wasn't really not knowing what brands work, but more with my shopping venue -- DSW is one of those places where sometimes they've got what you want and sometimes all the have is ... pink!

hi there!!!
[info]prettypammie and I are in Vienna now...we don't have to wait until January to see each other in Boston! Bizarre, eh?

Re: hi there!!!
great -- you guys are in Vienna, and I'm in Oxford and then Scotland until mid-August. Are you still going to be in Vienna at that point?

Re: hi there!!!
Yep! Look us up when you're back.

Jealous about Interaction...I always planned to go, but it's just not in the cards with everything else going on.

Re: hi there!!!
It would have been significantly more problematic for me to be at Interthingy had this gig at the XML Summer School not come up. Not only was the timing close to perfect, but my travel costs have been covered. This summer, that's not a small piece of the picture.

Re: hi there!!!
very cool!

XML School sounds cool, too!
